Deep-water Hydromedusae from the Lacaze-Duthiers submarine canyon (Banyuls, northwestern Mediterranean) and description of two new genera (<i>Guillea</i> and <i>Parateclaia</i>) OMA
Bouillon, J.; Pagès, F.; Gili, J.-M.; Palanques, A.; Puig, P.; Heussner, S..
Several species of hydromedusae are reported from material collected by sediment traps placed in the Lacaze-Duthiers submarine canyon, off Banyuls (north-western Mediterranean). Two new taxa <i>Guillea canyonincolae</i> gen. nov. et sp. nov, and <i>Parateclaia euromarge</i> fam. nov., gen. nov. et sp. nov., are described. The existence of highly-specific hydromedusa populations in other Mediterranean canyons which appear to be related via geological history, topography, hydrographic and ecological features peculiar to each canyon, is discussed in relation to these new records.

Flux and composition of settling particles across the continental margin of the Gulf of Lion: the role of dense shelf water cascading ArchiMer
Pasqual, C.; Sanchez-vidal, A.; Zuniga, D.; Calafat, A.; Canals, M.; Durrieu De Madron, X.; Puig, P.; Heussner, S.; Palanques, A.; Delsaut, N..
Settling particles were collected using sediment traps deployed along three transects in the Lacaze-Duthiers and Cap de Creus canyons and the adjacent southern open slope from October 2005 to October 2006. The settling material was analyzed to obtain total mass fluxes and main constituent contents (organic matter, opal, calcium carbonate, and siliciclastics). Cascades of dense shelf water from the continental shelf edge to the lower continental slope occurred from January to March 2006. They were traced through strong negative near-bottom temperature anomalies and increased current speeds, and generated two intense pulses of mass fluxes in January and March 2006. This oceanographic phenomenon appeared as the major physical forcing of settling particles at...

Impact of dense shelf water cascading on the transfer of organic matter to the deep western Mediterranean basin ArchiMer
Sanchez-vidal, A.; Pasqual, C.; Kerherve, P.; Calafat, A.; Heussner, S.; Palanques, A.; Durrieu De Madron, X.; Canals, M.; Puig, P..
During winter 2005 - 2006, particle fluxes and near-bottom currents were measured in and around the Lacaze-Duthiers and Cap de Creus submarine canyons ( western Gulf of Lion). Current anomalies show the occurrence of a major dense shelf water cascading event down to the slope, the latest recorded up to date in the area. Concomitant increased total mass fluxes highlight the ability of cascading waters to transport large amounts of coarse sediment and organic matter, which is predominantly of terrestrial origin. In addition, results reveal that the current regime and associated grain size sorting is the responsible for a geochemical gradient of settling organic particles along the slope.

Impact of open-ocean convection on particle fluxes and sediment dynamics in the deep margin of the Gulf of Lions ArchiMer
Stabholz, M.; Durrieu De Madron, X.; Canals, M.; Khripounoff, Alexis; Taupier-letage, Isabelle; Testor, Pierre; Heussner, S.; Kerherve, P.; Delsaut, N.; Houpert, Loic; Lastras, G.; Dennielou, Bernard.
The deep outer margin of the Gulf of Lions and the adjacent basin, in the western Mediterranean Sea, are regularly impacted by open-ocean convection, a major hydrodynamic event responsible for the ventilation of the deep water in the western Mediterranean Basin. However, the impact of open-ocean convection on the flux and transport of particulate matter remains poorly understood. The variability of water mass properties (i.e., temperature and salinity), currents, and particle fluxes were monitored between September 2007 and April 2009 at five instrumented mooring lines deployed between 2050 and 2350-m depth in the deepest continental margin and adjacent basin. Four of the lines followed a NW-SE transect, while the fifth one was located on a sediment wave...

Major consequences of an intense dense shelf water cascading event on deep-sea benthic trophic conditions and meiofaunal biodiversity ArchiMer
Pusceddu, A.; Mea, M.; Canals, M.; Heussner, S.; Durrieu De Madron, X.; Sanchez-vidal, A.; Bianchelli, S.; Corinaldesi, C.; Dell'Anno, A.; Thomsen, L.; Danovaro, R..
Numerous submarine canyons around the world are preferential conduits for episodic dense shelf water cascading (DSWC), which quickly modifies physical and chemical ambient conditions while transporting large amounts of material towards the base of slope and basin. Observations conducted during the last 20 yr in the Lacaze-Duthiers and Cap de Creus canyons (Gulf of Lion, NW Mediterranean Sea) report several intense DSWC events. The effects of DSWC on deep-sea ecosystems are almost unknown. To investigate the effects of these episodic events, we analysed changes in the meiofaunal biodiversity inside and outside the canyon. Sediment samples were collected at depths varying from ca. 1000 to > 2100m in May 2004 (before a major event), April 2005 (during a...

Origin and Accumulation of Trace Elements in Sediments of the Northwestern Mediterranean Margin ArchiMer
Cossa, Daniel; Buscail, R.; Puig, P.; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Radakovitch, Olivier; Jeanty, G.; Heussner, S..
Continental margins receive natural and anthropogenic trace elements (TEs) from direct atmospheric deposition of aerosols onto the sea surface and from advection of riverine suspended particles and/or resuspended sediments from the continental shelf/slope. When the margin is incised by submarine canyons, as for example in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, most of these particles are preferentially transferred via these topographic features towards their final repositories in the abyssal plain. The Gulf of Lions (GoL) shelf receives the largest particulate riverine input to the Western Mediterranean, with its associated chemical contaminants originating from the industrialized and urbanized Rhone Valley. Sediments samples (grabs, cores and moored traps)...

Sediment transport along the Cap de Creus Canyon flank during a mild, wet winter ArchiMer
Martin, J.; De Madron, X. Durrieu; Puig, P.; Bourrin, F.; Palanques, A.; Houpert, Loic; Higueras, M.; Sanchez-vidal, A.; Calafat, A. M.; Canals, M.; Heussner, S.; Delsaut, N.; Sotin, C..
Cap de Creus Canyon (CCC) is known as a preferential conduit for particulate matter leaving the Gulf of Lion continental shelf towards the slope and the deep basin, particularly in winter when storms and dense shelf water cascading coalesce to enhance the seaward export of shelf waters. During the CASCADE (CAscading, Storm, Convection, Advection and Downwelling Events) cruise in March 2011, deployments of recording instruments within the canyon and vertical profiling of the water column properties were conducted to study with high spatial-temporal resolution the impact of such processes on particulate matter fluxes. In the context of a mild and wet 2010–2011 winter, no remarkable dense shelf water formation was observed. On the other hand, the...
